_ People always refer to themselves as being either morning people or night time people. I personally have never met anyone who is happy to get out of bed in the morning, and certainly not in my family, even though I know that they must exist. My father always wakes up fresh but even he would rather like to stay in bed. I have to get up ridiculously early in order to get the children to school on time. I set my alarm a little early so that I can have the satisfaction of hitting the snooze button and pretend that I have a few more minutes. I use that time to actually get my eyes open and my brain in gear.

These days it is harder to get up since the mornings are so cold and dark and my Hungarian goose down duvetseems to grab me and hold me down like an American football player during a tackle. At times like this I regret stopping at that bed linen sale last month and buying a cheap memory foam mattress and some Hungarian goose down pillows, since the comfort that they provide make it even more difficult for me to leave my bed.

Early morning starts have always been a problem for me mainly because I do not manage to get to bed early and when I do eventually fall asleep, my sleep is often disturbed and I wake up feeling groggy and feeling as though I have had no rest at all. For the past couple of months, this problem has gotten steadily worse due to some disturbances in the home which have caused me to have trouble sleeping.

A lot of people resort to taking medication in times of stress in order to be able to function properly and to help them get off to sleep. For some reason I have never taken this route and I think that this aversion to medication could stem from a childhood fear or maybe from having seen my mother taking a lot of medicine for all of her life, for various ailments. Whatever the reason, I always try to find an alternative solution to any problems that I encounter as I go through life.

For a good night’s sleep it is essential that your mind is relaxed as well as your body, otherwise you will find that your brain will remain as active as it has been all day, throughout the night, and you will end up tossing and turning underneath your Hungarian goose down duvet. The best way to handle sleeping problems is to try and deal with whatever the actual problem is or at least try to relax and clear your mind before you get in to bed. A warm bath and a hot milky drink are a popular method of relaxing before bed as is listening to soft music and light reading. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and heavy spicy meals just before you go to bed.

_ The seasons do not seem to affect our lives as much as they did in ancient times but we like to see the changes that are brought by Mother Nature throughout the different times of the year. For instance, my favourite time of the year is autumn because even though I know that winter is just around the corner, with its bone-chilling temperatures and icy winds, I love to savour the hint of chill in the air and the glorious colours around. I love the crisp mornings with the occasional frost covering the ground first thing in the morning, the evenings which often bring the smell of wood fires as the gardeners finish the last of the work before the cold sets in, and best of all, the riot of colours on all the trees and bushes as the leaves change colour.

The gradual shading of the leaves from green to eventual brown, is accompanied by the whole gamut of colours ranging from plain red, russet, orange, yellow, purple and scarlet. Even the browns range from the boring to mahogany and chocolate. It is at this time of the year that my thoughts turn to warm fireplaces and the cosiness of my bed. In the summer I have to use blackout curtains on my bedroom windows because otherwise, the sunlight streams straight in and onto my bed at the most inconvenient times and forces me to have to wake up at stupid o’clock. In the winter, I find that same sunshine comforting and open my curtains at night so as to catch the morning sun.

I love to lie awake on my cheap memory foam mattress and pull my Hungarian goose down duvet up to my chin while I try to convince myself that I really do need to get up. I have always believed in having nice bedding and often hunt out a bed linen sale even out of season. I enjoy resting my head on Hungarian goose down pillows and my previous favourite was a Siberian goose down duvet.

The longer nights at this time of the year mean that I have the excuse of creeping into my bed a lot earlier than in the summer and snuggle up with a good book or even work brought home from the office. I have a pair of cute furry animal slippers which were a birthday present from a good friend and I practically live in them all through the winter and change into them as soon as I walk into the door. These slippers, along with a few woolly socks and a couple of fleecy pyjamas basically make up the bulk of my winter wardrobe when I am at home. at the office, I need to make more of an effort but even then, I find myself looking forward to getting home and snuggling into my Hungarian goose down duvet. Add this to a cup of hot chocolate and it feels wonderful and comforting.

_ I think that just about every one in the western world has heard about how Margaret Thatcher used to get by on only four hours of sleep a night and how she felt that that amount was sufficient for her to be alert and energetic every day. While some of us admired her for her claim, others felt that she was foolish and many people actually felt that she was lying about how many hours she managed to sleep. Although the truth is between her and her alarm clock, we need to admit that she certainly was vibrant and aware throughout the day.

When I was growing up, like most children, I would try to put off the moment that must go to bed for as long as I possibly could, by using excuses like extra homework, last minute hunger pangs and the inevitable thirst for another glass of water. Alas, it was all to no avail, since my mother saw through each of my carefully prepared statements and sent me off packing at the usual time. While I resented her firmness at the time, I now admit that she had a point when she claimed that an hour of sleep before midnight was worth two hours after midnight.

I find that the earlier I go bed, even if I have to get up earlier because I have had enough sleep, the more refreshed I feel, whereas when I go to bed after twelve o’clock (which to be honest is actually most of the time), I my sleep is disturbed and no matter how comfortable my cheap memory foam mattressand Hungarian goose down duvetis, I do not feel rested. I have tried to change my bed time so that I can manage to be asleep for eleven, but something always delays me and I find myself tossing and turning on my Hungarian goose down pillows for at least an hour. I know that it is just a matter of training and routine so that my internal body clock can adjust to a new sleep pattern but I never seem to be able to manage three early nights on the run.

I am very strict about my children’s bedtime and make sure that they go to bed at the times I deem appropriate for their ages. I realise that this is probably a result of my own bedtime regimen when I was a child but with age comes wisdom and I now tackle my kid’s excuses in the same way which my mother dealt with me. When my middle child was a baby she would have five minute power naps and then awake completely fresh, as though she had just slept for a couple of hours. I have tried to have power naps but find that I fall into deep sleep so quickly that I wake up groggy and in a worse mood than I was before I decided to try having a nap!

_ At the weekend we hosted a party for family and friends which in our case amounts to a large scale function, considering the size of our extended family. It was in honour of a niece who was to be married soon as well as it being the anniversary of another couple. This caused us to have the affair catered rather than struggling for days in the kitchen and being too tired to enjoy the actual party.

The guests arrived mostly at the given time apart from the usual suspects who consider being on time as being beneath them and enjoy keeping everyone waiting. This time we were adamant that things would run on time and the festivities started with the guests who had arrived. Once the merriment was underway and the cakes having been cut, the food was served and enjoyed by all. The relief of having hired help around to serve and clean up was well worth the expense and I would recommend outside catering to anyone thinking about having a do at home.

Nextcame the gift presentations and the calls to have them opened immediately. Being good sports, all three guests of honour proceeded to open their gifts. There was a lot of teasing and good natured banter amongst the guests, with a lot of competition as to who gave the best gift. Along with the usual items such as clothes, household items and knick-knacks was a lovely duo of a Hungarian goose down duvet and a Siberian goose down duvet (one for the happy couple and one for the bride-to-be) and a set of Hungarian goose down pillows for each of them. We were later told that all the items were available at the new department store which had just opened and was having a general sale and a special bed linen sale to promote the opening. Upon inquiring, I was told that they also had good range of beds and mattresses as well as the quality cheap memory foam mattress I had been after for a long time.

Once the food and drink had been consumed and the guests partied out, the caterers gone and the music turned down, it was time to think about sorting out sleeping arrangements for those people who had decided to stay the night as they were from out of town (or just didn’t want to leave yet). After the rooms and bedding were allocated we saw the final guests to the door. Children and old people who had fallen asleep earlier on in the evening were awakened, bundled up and ushered into the waiting warmed up cars.

Viewing the state of the house once the last guests had left, my heart started to sink. Once again I was grateful that we had contracted a company to come round in the morning to clean up the mess and put things to right. So, tired, but pleasantly so, we sat around discussing the evening, before nodding off.
